Caffeine can be found in coffee, various teas, energy drinks, chocolate and soft drinks. The amount of caffeine in this food and drinks are varies. It is widely consume to boost productivity, act as stimulant and concentration while working.
Consuming food and drinks containing caffeine may affects your fertility. Although no direct effects found in consuming caffeine towards fertility, women who consume a large amount of caffeine may took longer to get pregnant, as well increase risks in miscarriage and infant’s low birth weight.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommended caffeine intake should be less than 200mg per day. Meanwhile, WHO recommendation for caffeine intake is 300mg per day. However, if you are pregnant or intend to get pregnant, restrict caffeine consumption up to 200mg per day.
On average, a cup of coffee consist of approximately 100mg of caffeine.
Therefore, the caffeine intake should be monitored and controlled to avoid overdose caffeine issues.
CAFFEINE EFFECTS ON WOMENS’ FERTILITY
Excessive coffee and caffeine uptake make affect your fertility by influencing your hormonal level. This may influence the optimum function of your ovary to perform consistent ovulation.
The hormonal imbalance due to excessive caffeine uptake may havoc your menstrual cycle, by causing shorter menstrual cycle.
The caffeine uptake may influence blood flow towards placenta, hence may trigger miscarriage.

Drinking caffeine, regardless how much do not to cause any sperm abnormalities. However, excessive caffeine uptake may risks damages on Sertoli cells.
Sertoli cells are a group of cells at male testis that help to produce sperms. Any damages on Sertoli cells may affect sperm quality and quantity.
Nevertheless, caution should be taken when it comes to caffeine consumption. It is better to stick your caffeine uptake to moderate level to avoid adverse effects on fertility.
STEPS TO MINIMIZE CAFFEINE CONSUMPTION
Effects of caffeine consumption towards fertility and your ability to get pregnant are inconclusive.
Nevertheless, caution should be taken when it comes to caffeine consumption. It is better to stick your caffeine uptake to moderate level to avoid adverse effects on fertility.
To reduce caffeine uptake, you can do it gradually to avoid caffeine withdrawal syndrome. Some of the steps to be taken to minimize your caffeine uptake as follows:
- Cut down caffeine consumption gradually. For example, if you used to drink 4 cups coffee per day, you can reduce coffee consumption gradually. This can be down by cut down to 3 cups per day for one week, followed by 1 cup for 1 week. This can be continued until your body no longer rely on coffee.
- Substitute drinks with higher caffeine content to lesser caffeine content. For example, you can substitute caffeinated coffee with decaf coffee or chocolate drinks with much lesser caffeine content.
- Read labels on food and drink packages so that you are alert any food and drinks with caffeine content. Once you are aware of its caffeine ingredients, stay away as much as you could.
- Opt for medication or painkiller that are free from caffeine content. Ask your doctor for better alternatives.
