Your Cervical Mucus: How It Changes Throughout Your Period Cycle

Cervical mucus is a  fluid that is secreted from your  cervix (the opening to the uterus). Your hormones influencing the  texture, volume, and color of your cervical mucus. The cervical mucus texture will tells a lot about your fertility.

Why is your body secreting cervical mucus?

Cervical mucus has two primary functions. The first is to facilitate the movement of sperm cells from your cervix towards your womb. This will help the sperm cells to meet the female egg (ovum) in Fallopian tube. The cervical mucus secreted during your most fertile period will assist the female egg fertilization.

The other function of cervical mucus is to prevent dust, dirt and pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and yeasts from causing infection to reproductive system. The cervical mucus acts as a preventative barrier to preserve the health of your reproductive system.

How your cervical mucus changes throughout your period cycle?

Right before ovulation, the texture of your cervical mucus  is thick, whitish, sticky and dry.  As soon you reach ovulation period, your cervical mucus  texture will resemble egg white. Often it describes as having  clear, stretched and  watery. This consistency will help the sperm cells to swim up towards woman’s womb to meet the female egg cells.

When your cervix releasing the egg white discharge, it signals your body in its most fertile period. Hence, you should timing your sexual intercourse within 24 hours to boost your chance to conceive.

If your body releasing cervical mucus after ovulation and a period after sexual intercourse, it may indicates your conception has already happens. Congratulation! The discharge may slightly mixed with a small amount of blood as a result of implantation bleeding on your womb.

However, if no conception occur, your cervical mucus will dries up. If this happen, fret not. You can try to get pregnant again on your next ovulation cycle.

What are the different types of cervical mucus?

To summarize, your cervical mucus changes according to your period cycle. This is due to hormonal influence. The pattern of your cervical mucus texture as follows:

1-4 days after period: Dry texture or no cervical fluid release.

4-6 days after period: Sticky texture like toothpaste, which may appear as whitish or yellowish.

7-9 days after period:  The cervical mucus appear as creamy texture like yogurt. For some women, it may appear as wet and cloudy in texture.

10-14 days after period: The cervical mucus appears as slippery, stretchy and clear liquid resembles egg white. This texture is due to the peak of estrogen level, which indicates your body in your most fertile period.

Within a 28-day period cycle, your most fertile  day  is around day 14th.  However, if you are having an irregular period cycle, observe the cervical mucus texture as a guideline to determine your most fertile day.

If your cervical mucus has greenish, dark yellowish, brownish and greyish color accompanies by a fishy smell and burning itchy, this may indicates infection. Please see your doctor if you have any of these signs for immediate treatment.
