All About Ovulation: What You Should Know & When Are You Ovulating

The answer is, cannot. Your ovulation cannot happen twice in one menstrual cycle. Twice ovulation can only happen if you are having a short period cycle, i.e: less than 21 days per period cycle.

Most women release one mature egg per period cycle. If you are lucky, your ovaries may release two mature eggs simultaneously in each period cycle.

Some women may experience hyper ovulation. It is a condition where several eggs are released simultaneously.  This will boost your chance to have multiple pregnancies, where more than one mature egg is fertilized by sperm cells.

However, having hyper ovulation will not necessarily result in multiple pregnancy, as the conception success is based on how good your eggs are.

Understanding your reproductive cycle can tell you if your ovaries release eggs consistently. This is important if you’re trying to conceive. And you should do whatever you can to boost your chance to conceive, as ovulation time frame is only 24 hours after egg release.

How many eggs are released when you are ovulating?

Your ovary releases one mature egg for each period cycle. If you have a 28-day period cycle, your ovulation may occur around the 14th day of your period cycle. The female egg stays for 24 to 48 hours in the fallopian tube after it is released from the ovary.

Hyperovulation happens when a female’s ovary produces more than one egg in a period cycle. When you release more than one egg, your chance to have multiple pregnancies increases.

Hyperovulation may occur by eating food or supplements that boost the egg production, or by taking specific medicine to boost the egg production.

Can I ovulate twice a month?

Twice ovulation is possible if you are having a short period cycle.

A calendar month consists of 30 or 31 days. If you are having a shorter period cycle (28 days or less), you may ovulate twice a month. This is by assuming that you are ovulating at the beginning of the month and close to the end of the calendar month.

Therefore, not every woman can ovulate twice. This is not possible if you are having a longer period cycle, especially beyond 28 days.

A small study of 63 women published in the Journal of Fertility and Sterility in July 2003 evaluated hormonal patterns during women’s menstrual cycles. The research looked at follicular development in participants’ ovaries, based on egg maturity duration and how many eggs were released in a month. Most women in the study did not ovulate twice in a month.

The research also found numerous follicular waves in 68 percent of women’s cycles. Follicular  waves refers to a development process of several follicles simultaneously in an ovary, which leads to only one egg release from the ovary.

What is hyperovulation?

If your ovary releases more than one eggs, you are having hyperovulation. Hyperovulation is a condition when more than one eggs release from your ovary. Not every woman experiencing hyperovulation. A normal ovulation process release only one egg from each ovary in a period cycle.

Hyperovulation will leads to multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, quituplets, etc.). Therefore, if you wish to have multiple pregnancies, you may want to consider approaches to boost hyperovulation.

Hyperovulation is often related to genetics. While no specific genes have been linked to hyperovulation, research indicates that multiple pregnancies can run in a family. If your grandmother and your mother ever had twin pregnancies, the chance is you may be able to have twin pregnancies as well.

Eating habits can boost hyperovulation. This may be applicable if you have no twin pregnancy genetics.  You can boost hyperovulation and chances for twinning pregnancy by eating food that stimulates ovulation, such as taro, cassava, yam, sweet potato, goat milk and food high in folic acid content.

If you are on your fertility treatment, certain medicines or hormonal injection may stimulate hyperovulation in your ovary.  This approach would normally prescribed to women who have ovulation issues, such as lack of consistent egg release every month or no egg release at all.

Drugs to boost ovulation such as Clomid and injected hormones such as follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) will boost your ovary to produce eggs for fertilization.

The use of drugs and hormonal injections to boost ovulation should be monitored and prescribed by doctor. Therefore, you should not use any these drugs or hormonal injections without advice and monitor from medical professionals to avoid severe side effects.

What you should know about ovulation if you’re trying to conceive (TTC)?

If you’re attempting to conceive, understanding your reproductive cycle can help you make decisions that will boost your chances of success. Tracking ovulation, such as using ovulation predictor kit (OPK) can help you to predict when you’re most fertile. This will allow you to schedule intercourse during a limited fertility time frame.

Finding out when your body is ovulating will also help. This is most important if you have a short period cycle or irregular period cycle.

Start to learn about your period cycle and ovulation days by mapping your period cycle in a calendar. Knowing when you start to have a period, how many days you are having your period, when you start ovulation and your next period cycle begins are useful information to doctors to tell about any fertility issues you might be having.

Be aware that when you are about to begin menstruating, your ovary begins to work on the egg maturity process. Therefore, you should monitor your lifestyle and eating habits that can help to boost your egg production.

The timing of sexual intercourse as close to ovulation day can help to boost your chance to get pregnant. Try actively to have sexual intercourse once you have signs of ovulation.

Sperms can remain for up to 5 days in the female reproductive system post-ejaculation. The egg fertilization chances can occur at any time within the period after you had your sexual intercourse with your partner.

And most importantly, try not to have any extreme sports or vigorous exercise. Be calm, avoid stress and be relaxed as much as you could to ensure the success of implantation of fertilized egg at uterus wall.
